Take a listen. This is not about frontline healthcare workers. The vast majority of them are rockstars simply trying to get through their day. This is about how their day is influenced by bad policy.
In my mind, the sooner we all begin challenging our elected officials to do better: though their committee assignments they are there to continually challenge the status-quo and always be considering if policies in play are making it easier or harder to meet the goal (in this case deliver high-quality healthcare to patients in a cost effective way).
Policy is important. But if a policy is not continually evaluated (eg. annually) to explore whether that policy should be amended, dropped or left as is, a policy often rots on the vine.
An example of this might be how we introduce new medications or treatment protocols into the 'system'. Pre-Covid, a policy which included a considerable period of internal evaluation likely worked reasonably well. But, within the grips of pandemic, does the internal system have the resources to follow that policy? Should they? Does that policy have room to incorporate data or research from elsewhere? Under what framework would it make sense to incorporate other research? Keep in mind vaccines were incorporated very quickly using Emergency Authorization.
Have you asked your elected representative about this?
Should you? Will you? I know I want to become better educated in this area. I look forward learning more from the discussion in the comments below.
There are zero easy answers to any complex question, but it is time to begin helping/encouraging our elected officials (no matter the party) to do better.
With so many new users coming over to Locals, I thought answering some questions might be helpful. You should find answers in here. You also get to learn a bit about me and what to expect in this community. Shhhh. It will be awesome. ;)
